More DescriptionUpon the glistening moon's mid-darkness, barely two o'clock, the Hiwaiian calypso made port in Catalina Island's Avalon Bay, 30 miles west of Los Ángelus. The two sea faring adventurers bedded down for the night after a tranquilizing breath of frankincense and a glass of fruit juice, tinged with ginseng and sassafras. Soon, throttled-back engines of a large vessel entering Avalon Bay harbor, broke the early morning stillness. A pair of flashing search lights scanned across the yacht's bow and cabin. Newton shielded his eyes from the blinding light and shouted from ship to ship. "What the heck do you think you're doing?" Two uniform dressed men with flash lights boarded their vessel. "U.S. Coastguard service. You are Professor Newton?" The annoyed, sleep-deprived professor glanced at Chi before releasing more wrath. "We don't need any services from the military! You can turn right around and get off our boat, now!" The officer stood his ground. "No sir. Orders from the operational supervisor of SETCOM investigations, sir. We are here to provide security clearance and access to the mainland, sir." Newton's belligerence boiled. "What the heck do we need a guide for? We just sailed from Hiwaii. Don't you think we can make it across the channel?" The officer moved closer. "SETCOM investigation has acquired a prohibited zone, sir. Therefore you are required to board our vessel for classified security access." Forty minutes later the military escort docked at a Naval research center, where the two scientists were met by Dr. Collins and her associates. "Thanks for coming, fellows. Please follow me." The group quickly entered a fully operational laboratory complex, cranking vacuum gauges, steam generators and a network of ventilation ducts blasting temperature controlled systems at full capacity. Puzzled, the scientists followed Collins into a Navy decompression chamber, converted into a decontamination facility. "Why all the sterilization procedures?" Collins posted a pertinent stare at Newton. "Two weeks ago, a herd of killer whales were located near the Conoco offshore oil drilling rig in the waters off the Gulf of Spain. The whales were contaminated with lethal radiation of a sort that we're still trying to identify. Physicists claim it has wavelengths shorter than gamma rays, dispersing more energy." Chi's concern quickly spoke. "Did the radiation kill the whales?" Collins released a heavy sigh. "That's the mystery. No. As a matter of fact, the mammals seem to be radiating strange energy bands." Newton frowned while stepping from the decontamination chamber, into a dark room surrounded by glowing thick aquarium glass, displaying huge pumping equipment filtering the sea water tank with bubbling oxygen. The professor approached the glass and gawked at the rainbow-like luminosity emitting from the 3 killer whales. The group moved to a single hallway heavily guarded, locked and bolted with security identification access. Warning words blinked in bright red flashes: RESTRICTED ZONE - CLASSIFIED OPERATIONS. When Collins passed a security clearance card to release the interlock, a verbal message engaged. "Warning, you have breached a restricted perimeter. Proceed with caution." The words repeated. The members of SETCOM moved to the side, observing Newton and Chi's reactions, upon entering the chamber harboring a single million-gallon cubical tank. The professor's astonished eyes widened. "What in heaven's name is that?" he sighed verbally. "It's the twenty-fourth specimen discovered in the chain of mythological creatures. A mighty Sea Titan called the Triton, half human and half fish, with a primordial brain." A six inch solid steal band around the creature's waist confined its movements, with four chrome steal chains bolting it to a concrete base. "Two days after one of six killer whales gave birth to the beast it killed and ate them all." Newton sought mercy. "My god! It's some kind of horrible monster..."
