More DescriptionSynopsis Teasdale is a gritty tale of life and loves in the mines during the 2nd World War. The perspective is from those who stayed at home to work in essential jobs and who suffered the privations of shortages and rationing, of uncertainty and grinding poverty. Life is harsh and money is scarce. Work is hard and job security tenuous. Jack Teasdale climbs out from the bottom rung of the mining hierarchy and makes a significant impression on the mine's owners and those around him. His strength of character, initiative and sense of fair play endear him to the reader whilst his passionate affair adds spice to the tale. There is humour, tragedy, honour and treachery bound together in a fictional story which has a strong basis in the memories of those who were part of the original reality. The result is a very believable feel of the 1940s in wartime Britain. The underlying themes are ultimately little different to those which obtain in the affluent society of today.
