More Description
His mother a German nurse and his father the son of the Liberian consul to Germany, Hans Massaquoi spent the earliest years of his life living in his influential family’s mansion and otherwise receiving the same upbringing as any German boyuntil, that is, the rise of the Nazis. Massaquoi’s father returned to Liberia and left his wife and son to navigate life under Hitler, and in this autobiography the author describes his own initial attraction to the German leaderan affinity that would see him, ironically enough, adopt an anti-Semitic attitudeand the disappointment he felt when told he was not allowed to join the Hitler Youth. Against the backdrop of the Allied bombing campaign, Massaquoi increasingly found himself on the wrong side of surging German nationalism and facing a lonely struggle for survival in a homeland that viewed him as undesirable.
