Do you want to teach your child to read in a way that is fun, easy and natural? Do you want to lay the foundation for a lifetime of happy reading moments?
The "See, Say, Read!" Series (with FLASHCARDS) is a system of reading that is geared to take a child's natural curiosity concerning how things work and uses it to illustrate the way the sounds of letters are joined together to make words...he or she can read.
In this first "See, Say, Read!" book, children use arrows to guide their eyes and soon discover that that they can read!
Each page spread highlights one word:
- Left page: One CVC (consonant vowel consonant) or easy-to-read word with the short ă vowel sound is highlighted. For instance, the first word is "cat."
- Build the word: The highlighted word is illustrated with directional arrows to guide your child's eyes in how to construct the word.
- Image: A small picture of the object or meaning of the word is depicted below.
- Right page: A simple sentence using the highlighted word with a large pictorial and fun representation above.
- Sight words: Snap words (sight words) are introduced within the simple sentences as the building blocks to sentences.
- Flashcards: All of the short ă words and snap words used in the book are located in card form at the end. To be cut out or used within the book. Make sure to ask your child to find the word in the story.
- Personal expression: Space for your child to draw pictures of the highlighted words and to write the word out.
Words are puzzles to see, say, read:
- Speech: Words are spoken by babies before they can comprehend what letters are or put them together to read them.
- Simple Sentences: When babies become toddlers they learn to speak in short sentences and start taking an interest in the squiggly lines that make up the written word.
- Sounds: As they learn the alphabet, toddlers comprehend that letters have individual and specific sounds.
- Recognition: Young children start to recognize the written letters and their associate sounds.
- Reading: It is innate in all humans to want to put the sounds of letters together to make words and to read.
- Magic: When children understand that letters and their corresponding sounds are the tools to reading, magic happens.
- On a personal note: After more than twenty years in teaching young children to read, I can honestly say that to be present when a child realizes that he or she can read is still one of the most awe-inspiring moments to experience. The look in a child's eyes as he or she gazes up at me in the wonder of it all and what it means to their lives--the opening of so many marvelous adventures through the written word--is thrilling.
The "See, Say, Read!" Series with FLASHCARDS is a system of reading that takes this God-given, innate ability found in all humans and makes the transition from the spoken word to the written word a time of joy and wonder to a new reader.
If you like the classic method of teaching the five short vowel sounds and the five long vowel sounds, then this "See, Say, Read" Series of books is for you. As in previous centuries, it forms the basic building blocks to a life-long love and ease of reading in your child. This tried and true method of instruction is mixed with the modern method of showing through arrows the direction children's eyes should take in putting the letters together to make words. It is not a chore but something fun and rewarding, a simple puzzle even, for your young child to enjoy.
