The politics and struggles surrounding Palestine are writ large across history, usually portrayed in broad, simplistic terms telling only one side of a complex story. The lives of those uprooted and exiled when Israel took control of Gaza, Golan Heights, and the West Bank are largely forgotten, although hundreds of thousands of Palestinians have been displaced by Israeli interests.
Suhail Bulos remembers. His family traces its history in Palestine back to 1740, when his Christian ancestors migrated from Syria to Galilee. The Bulos family has deep roots in Palestinian soil, but like innumerable others, the establishment of an Israeli state cost them their historical home.
The Church Bell on Sunday is more than a personal memoir. Bulos's longing for his lost home permeates his writing with a bittersweet mix of nostalgia, anger, and hope for the future. Life outside of Palestine has had its rewards, but never made up for the loss of his country.
