More DescriptionThe return to duty on the streets of N. Ireland for Inspector Blaise throws his life into chaotic turmoil and danger as he is assigned a murder case, where the suspect is the victim's lover, who has been brutally raped and beaten by the victim. Blaise finds himself trying to keep secret his affair with the wife of an active terrorist only to discover that all is not as it appears. The murder suspect is reluctantly released but later found beside the body of a second victim but upon deeper investigation a new suspect is discovered in the shape of his close friend and colleague, DS Charlie Brown, whose father was discovered murdered paramilitary style. Blaise's loyalty is thrown into question as he confronts his colleague about the murders and DS Brown decides to take matters into his own hands to prove his innocence. Blaise discovers later that DS Brown is being held captive by the real killer after stealing money from him at a club that shocks Blaise when he discovers who owns the club. Following a violent confrontation with DS Brown's captor, Blaise explodes with anger to discover DS Brown dying in his arms and the killer is arrested. On interviewing the killer, Blaise discovers a series of startling revelations. The arrival of an MI5 officer and someone from Special Branch shock Blaise as they demand that the killer be released without delay, but Blaise and his superior, DCI Cruickshank, a stern Glaswegian, refuse to release the suspect. When Blaise decides to interview the suspect again, he is stunned to learn that the suspect is holding a young uniformed officer at knifepoint in an attempt to escape, but Blaise is adamant that the murderer of his close friend and colleague would not escape, and in a moment of uncertainty, Blaise aims his pistol and shoots the suspect in the head.
