Book Excerpt "Miss Sullivan is not a woman of that stamp. If SHE has committed a crime, she has done it in a moment of passion, and remorse will kill her, though the vengeance of the law should never overtake her. But she is subtle and elusive. It is not reason that makes her cunning, but feeling. With man it would be reason; and as I could follow the course of his argument, whichever path it took, I should soon overtake it. But a woman, working from a passion, either of hate or love, will sometimes come to such novel conclusions as to defy the sharpest guesses of the intellect.
Synopsis The Dead Letter novel by Seeley Regester first published in 1866, is the first American detective novel. Set in mid-nineteenth-century New York, the plot revolves around the assassination of Henry Moreland, Eleanor Argyll's fiancé. Richard Renfield, a family friend who hopes to join Eleanor's father's law firm, decides to investigate the crime. Mr. Burton, a detective from New York City, and Renfield begin working together to find the murderer. As a result of suspicion, Renfield is shunned from Argyll's law office and the women he loves. He is transferred to The Dead Letter Office, a post office department where he found a letter which might be an essential lost bit in the stack of proof that points to the murderer. This detective romance novel also includes some paranormal elements, as one of the detectives is able to "read" people and scenes through physical evidence.
