A young brother and sister are taken from their modest but adored home in the rapidly developing 1920s port of Hong Kong back to their ancestral roots - a traditional and unforgiving familial hierarchy in a small fishing village on the deeply impoverished coast of the South China Sea.

They find themselves mixed-race outcasts in a small and judgmental community when their mother dies, leaving them at the mercy of a family who neither want to nor are able to keep them.

Both still children, brother and sister must learn to fight for themselves, together, to break free from the paths set out for them.

And they need to do it before they are separated forever.

To survive, they must make the choices their mother before them couldn't.

They will need to outrun fate.
