More Description
Netanyahu was born in Tel Aviv to secular Jewish parents and raised in Jerusalem and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in the United States. In 1967, he returned to Israel and joined the Israeli Defense Forces. His special forces unit was involved in a number of missions. He was released from the Navy as a captain. Following his graduation from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Netanyahu joined the Boston Consulting Group as an economic consultant. In 1978, he returned to Israel to established the Yonatan Netanyahu Anti-Terror Institute.
He is known as the maestro of survival in Israel's volatile political landscape. Since taking power in 2009, he has seen allies come and go, protégés turn out to be adversaries, and elections occur at the most inconvenient times. But he never missed an opportunity to transform a crisis into electoral gain, allowing him to surpass David Ben-Gurion as the longest-serving Prime Minister in Israel's history. This, however, may be coming to an end.
A combination of eight parties led by Opposition lawmaker Yair Lapid might force Mr. Netanyahu out of office and form a 'change' administration. Mr. Lapid, the leader of the centrist Yesh Atid party, has joined forces with Naftali Bennett's right-wing Yamina and other parties ranging from pro-settlers to left-wing and Arab parties in this effort. Mr. Bennett, who was a member of the far-right Jewish Home before joining Yamina, would serve as Prime Minister for two years before being succeeded by Mr. Lapid. Mr. Lapid claims that his coalition has 61 Knesset Members (MKs), a razor-thin majority in the 120-member Parliament. Mr. Netanyahu is pressuring the coalition's right-wing MKs to vote against the government, while Messrs. Lapid and Bennet are pushing for a swift vote in the Knesset.
