More DescriptionThe Faerie Queene is an English epic poem by Edmund Spenser, first published in 1590. It was the first epic poem written in the English language. This book focuses on the virtue of holiness as embodied in the Redcrosse Knight, whom must fight off monsters, wizards and betrayal on his quest to marry his lady Una. Though the text is primarily an allegorical work, it can be read on several levels, including as praise of Queen Elizabeth I. The poem was a clear effort to gain court favour, and as a reward Elizabeth granted Spenser a pension for life amounting to £50 a year. This royal patronage elevated the poem to a level of success that made it Spenser's defining work. This edition is formatted for a smaller page and made to fit most pockets. It is unannotated, presented purely for the joy of poetry reading, and makes a great travel companion.
