She was born about 1335, the daughter of William de Plumpton and his wife Christiana de Mowbray. Her father held important positions including that of High Sheriff of Yorkshire, and he was knighted in 1340. Alice de Plumpton became the wife of Richard de Sherburne in 1352, and later, after being widowed, she became the wife of John le Boteler.
