More Description The Founders & Their America traces the growing conflict between the Thirteen Colonies and Britain that began in the Seven Years' War and accelerated from the Stamp Act to the Intolerable Acts, culminating in the decision for independence. It narrates the battles of the American Revolution that established that independence, then the efforts to design a government for the new United States that led to George Washington's inauguration as President in 1789. The story turns bitterly partisan in the 1790s, much like our current impasse, and almost shipwrecks the system in the contested election of 1800. Thomas Jefferson's winners then fought what seemed a second War for Independence (1813-15) against Britain, which the young republic narrowly survived. This first book in a three-part series looks in depth at the question -- much debated today -- of whether the U.S. was founded as a Christian nation.
