Elizabeth Berridge was born in London on December 3, 1919. In 1945, her first two novels, The Story of Stanley Brent and The House of Defence, were published. Her other works include Selected Stories, Be Clean, Be Tidy, Upon Several Occasions, Sing Me Who You Are, People at Play, Touch and Go, and Family Matters. Across the Common won the 1964 Yorkshire Post Novel of the Year Award. She also wrote short stories for numerous publications including Cornhill, Winter's Tales, London Magazine, and New Writing. For 25 years she reviewed novels for the Daily Telegraph, the Spectator, the Literary Review and the Tablet. She also served as a judge for a number of literary prizes. She died on December 2, 2009 at the age of 89.
