More DescriptionThe Good Germans documents the history of the Neu family and their friends and relations from their beginnings in the early 19th century, through World Wars I and II, including service in the former, and their expulsion and attempted extermination in the latter. It relies on the historical record and hundreds of personal documents (translated from the German) in an attempt to blend history (both global and personal) and politics to create a tapestry of European Jewish life in the Twentieth century. The main character is Herta Neu who was born three weeks after the dawn of that century. Herta was forced to reject her fiancé and marry a man hand picked by her father. We follow her and her friends and lovers as they struggle to survive the perils of simply being Jewish.
