Why would a twenty-five year old single mother with four children, continue to do drugs? Why would a young boy tell stories about his fictional father and years later admit his greatest moment of shame was when he realized his mom was spiritually with him during his time in prison? And why would this man, now father, weep with joy the day he held his new-born daughter? Imagine sliding your shoes so you would never have to pick up your feet to avoid exposing the holes on the bottom of the only pair you owned; or having your foster brother steal your school clothes. Why would a mother buy all the newspapers at her place of employment, in order to hide the truth that her son was convicted of a crime? Perhaps her actions explains why he wept that first night in prison trying to compose a letter to his mom, begging for forgiveness. If someone grows up living g in eighteen different homes, is it any wonder why she would refer to her life as, "living out of a backpack?" And could this same person, who was in prison at the time of her niece's funeral, be forgiven for missing the service? Is there hope for a young man whose father had been in prison nine times; a college student whose greed led to twelve years' incarceration for 3rd degree murder; a drug dealer who sold crack cocaine to pregnant women; or a high school student involved in rape? And will it matter if an inmate is told by a chaplain, "God sent him to prison for a reason?" These are the realities the men and women in The Hell and Back Gang experienced.
