Along with his close friend Hank Lowrie Jackson, a Native American working for an unnamed Executive Branch agency, Doherty delves into the killing, only to find out someone is desperate to derail his investigation. Pursuing the matter, Doherty manages to raise the suspicions of the FBI, incur the wrath of a mobster, and match wits with a hired assassin, all the while tending to his three cats and convincing Dana, his long time love, not to take a job in Boston.
