More Description
A fighter pilot is a military aviator trained to engage in air-to-air combat, air-to-ground combat, and sometimes electronic warfare while in the cockpit of a fighter aircraft. Fighter pilots undergo specialized training in aerial warfare and dogfighting (close-range aerial combat). A fighter pilot with at least five air-to-air kills becomes known as an ace.
This book is about 4 flying fighters, Alan Rawlinson and Nicky Barr were successful RAAF fighter pilots in North Africa 1940-42. Each survived the hardships of living in the Desert, flying fighters that were not superior to those of the enemy, and inferior in the case of the Messerschmitt Bf 109 flown by experienced Germans. Both rose from junior pilot to command 3 Squadron RAAF and went on to serve in higher HQs.
Both survived crashes; Nicky was shot down several times.
