Theodora Getty Gaston was born Theodora Lynch in Chicago, Illinois on September 13, 1913. She met J. Paul Getty while she was singing at a New York nightclub. When Gaston decided to take opera singing lessons, Getty agreed to pay for it if she paid him 10% of her future singing earnings. She was freed only when her employer vouched that she was a journalist. She returned to the United States in 1942.
