It's April 2061. The UK and the world has been through thirty years of strict controls to combat runaway climate change. It's a dystopian world, where there is little fun- it's hard work and has been for all of 14-year-old Amber's life. She knows little else but this little commune in the corner of south-west London. Yet things are finally improving. Tonight, as curfew is relaxed, Amber and her Dad are watching her first ever (eco-friendly) fireworks display. It's a party...
More DescriptionIt's April 2061.
It's a party atmosphere at the riverside - a 'gift' of the Government - and Amber is captivated.
But then, she sees a firework travelling downwards at great speed, like a missile slicing into the River Thames. Was it really a firework? Going the wrong way? Nobody else appears to have seen it. So, she checks it out and spots something shimmering just beneath the surface. Something unlike anything she's ever seen before.
A homeless boy called Bo - one of the Outsiders - approaches her. He also spotted it and both of them very quickly come to the conclusion that some sort of spacecraft has landed in the Thames and only they know about it. At least that's what they think.
That same evening, Amber comes face to face with an alien form in her bathroom - an alien, Amber soon learns, that has crash-landed on Earth and needs her help to get her home to Neptune - nearly three BILLION miles away!
A daring plan is put into action to launch this alien - Blue - back into space for a rendezvous with a COMET, a comet that will take her right back home.
Amber is risking everything - arrest, the loss of her home, the disgrace of her family. Can she trust the Outsiders? Why does Blue give her so much hope for the future? And is she possibly falling in love with Bo?
This is a story of bravery and hope. Of a fearless teenage girl, determined to do what's right against the odds.
Of a planet and human civilisation emerging from a nightmare...
