In early 2015, the United States presidential election of 2016 was shaping up to be predictable, albeit historic. Jeb Bush, former governor of Florida, was leading the polls among Republicans, while Hillary Clinton, former Secretary of State under Barack Obama and former U.S. Senator from New York, was considered to be a shoe-in for Democratic nominee, even before officially announcing her candidacy. Clinton's fans had been waiting eight years for this--since her last run when she was defeated by Obama in the primaries in 2008--and they believed her time had come. But regardless of which was elected President, Bush or Clinton, history would be made.Jeb Bush, of course, was more than just a former governor; he was also the son of former President George H. W. Bush and brother of former President George W. Bush. If he were to become President, he'd be the first brother of a former President, and George H. W. Bush would be the first President to have two sons who also became President. Likewise, the Clinton name was already well-known in the United States. Prior to Hillary's making her own name in government, she was First Lady under Bill Clinton. By winning the 2016 election, she would be the first female President of the United States, and former President Bill Clinton would be the first "First Gentleman," though it was not yet clear what his title would be. As the year progressed, however, more candidates jumped into the race, and the competition stiffened. Overall, seventeen Republican candidates and six Democratic candidates vied for the Presidency. The most serious competition for Clinton was Bernie Sanders, U.S. Senator from Vermont, who represented the state as an Independent. Among the top contenders for the Republican nomination were John Kasich, Governor of Ohio; Ted Cruz, U.S. Senator from Texas; Marco Rubio, U.S. Senator from Florida; and Ben Carson, renowned neurosurgeon and former Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Then, there was the candidate who "didn't stand a chance," according to many political experts and laypeople alike: Donald J. Trump, businessman, author, and self-proclaimed billionaire, but perhaps best known for his catchphrase "You're fired!" as host of the reality show The Apprentice. While the majority of the other candidates touted their success in government as proof they were ready to lead the nation in the highest position, Trump prided himself in being a government outsider and promised to run the government like a business. Many people assumed he wasn't a serious candidate--that he was in the race for publicity alone. After all, this was not the first time Trump had begun a campaign for President. He had also run as the Reform Party presidential candidate in 2000, another campaign he claimed he would completely self-finance, but he never went beyond the exploratory stage. However, with that short-lived campaign, he made lots of media appearances, got his name out more, and enhanced his brand name, both as a real estate tycoon and author. So the speculation that he might be pulling the same stunt again was not far-fetched. But as the country--or, rather, the entire world--would soon see, that assumption could not be more wrong.
