Was it a suicide? Homicide? Accident? What was the mode of death? That is an age old question. The answer is uncovered through ?Death Scene Investigation? (DSI). DSIs have always been shrouded in deep veils of mystery. However, it can, as Graunt already showed in the 17th century, be evidence-based. More DescriptionWas it a suicide? Homicide? Accident? What was the mode of death? That is an age old question. The answer is uncovered through ?Death Scene Investigation? (DSI). DSIs have always been shrouded in deep veils of mystery. However, it can, as Graunt already showed in the 17th century, be evidence-based. Thus, an aim of this book is to teach the range of readers a roadmap to uncover the bare facts of suicides and other deaths. The recent American history of DSI focuses around the 1950?s, when Shneidman, Farberow, and Litman were asked to assist with coroners? cases in LA, which were ambiguous as to the mode of death (the decedent's intention). The clinical-scientific DSI procedure was labeled the psychological autopsy (PA). The PA allows one to see for oneself. It can be like fingerprinting and DNA analysis. Although the forensic and first responder specialist must be aware of the general literature (knowledge), he or she wants to know the facts in a specific, unique case. Illustrated with front-page newspaper case studies; e.g., Superintendent David Lucio and Inspector Kelly Johnson (a police homicide-suicide), R. vs. Cherylle Dell (a case certified as suicide that was a homicide), and The State of Indiana vs. Bei Bei Shuai (a case of attempted suicide by a pregnant woman that resulted in a charge of murder of her baby), the book meets the challenge ? to allow the student to the practitioner to better investigate, understand, and certify deaths which are uncertain as to mode, and why the death occurred and why at that particular time.
