More DescriptionA 400 tree and four acre Olive Grove was planted 125 years ago by a Scottish immigrant businessman and Contra Costa Sheriff named James. B. Rankin. The Rankin Olive Grove exists on the western hill of Martinez, California and is the last remnant of the great Rankin estate. James Beveridge Rankin began his prosperity in the Pittsburg coal mines (nee Nortonville) and rapidly rose to prominence in Contra Costa County, moving to Martinez and creating his estate where City of Martinez Rankin Park is today. He died at age 52, in 1901, and his descendants have continued to reside in Martinez where they too have made significant contributions. The Rankin Olive Grove was placed on the California State Register of Historic Places in 2012 as a California State Point of Historical Interest.
