The Rise and Fall of Corporate Social Responsibility

In the first book to cover the entire history of twentieth-century corporate social responsibility, Douglas M. Eichar argues that for most of the twentieth century, the benevolence of corporations functioned to stave off regulations and unions through the voluntary adoption of more progressive workplace practices and philanthropy. Eichar contends that, as governmental and union threats to managerial prerogatives withered at the century's end, so did corporate social responsibility.
