The most well-known historian in the US, David McCullough, passed away at the age of 89. His books were best-sellers, and HBO chose to adapt his biographies of John Adams and Harry Truman for television. Both biographies won Pulitzer Prizes. The US National Book Award was given to two more of his books, one on Theodore Roosevelt's early years and the other about the construction of the Panama Canal.
However, McCullough was arguably best known for his voice, both as the host of the venerable PBS series American Experience and as the narrator of documentaries, most notably Ken Burns' epic series The Civil War (1990) and the Disney film Seabiscuit (2003) about the sensational racehorse of the 1930s.
Everything McCullough wrote was rooted in the American experience, and his narration style--a silky, high-pitched baritone--left the impression that he was a relaxed instructor recounting well-known stories.
"He presents us portrayals of the American people that live, breathe, and above all tackle the essential issues of courage, achievement, and moral integrity," said the inscription accompanying his honorary degree from Yale University in 1998.
David was born in Pittsburgh, the son of Ruth (née Rankin), a prominent member of Pittsburgh society, and Christian McCullough, head of the McCullough Electric Company, which David's great-grandfather founded. David went to Shady Side Academy, the most exclusive prep school in Pittsburgh, with his father.
