More DescriptionThe novel is set in a small Yorkshire industrial town and follows the lives of a war damaged demobbed soldier and the naive wife of a moderately well off self employed consultant. The wife is of Irish descent though born in England, and the ex-soldier is affected by his experiences in Ulster. This sets a love hate relationship which is explored throughout the book. Her boss, husband and friend are the other main characters on her side of the story giving support and advice which is largely ignored. The ex-soldier has a wife sympathetic to his condition, a strong character, who's support and understanding has helped him in the past but in the end cannot save him.The action is set in a factory and in the home of the wife whose husband is frequently absent. It shows the sexual development of their relationship and the changing dominance of the partners until in the end it explodes in their faces.
