Most of these songs originated between 1850 and 1930. Several songs in this book are variations of older sea chanteys, while other songs are composed and sung in the tradition, using the voice as a vocal metronome with a pronounced rhythm. Songs like The Dawn of a Better Cigarette (selling Old Gold cigarettes) were used as advertisements, while the parody, Billy Bone's Fancy, is sung to the tune of the well-known chantey Blow the Man Down, and the song, Cap'n Sears Kendrick is sung to the tune of Sally Brown. Jimmy Yole's Chantey, a humorous song, is about Yole losing his false teeth in the ocean and then finding them while dredging for quahogs.
