EXCERPTThe only way that was available to find people prior to the internet was to pretext the large companies that had customer information. If you didn't live in a cave most likely you had electric, cable, credit, bank and other services or accounts that had your social security number. My job as a skip tracer was to pretext any place you had services at and find where you went. I also used a few sources that could get me credit reports, criminal records and motor vehicle records. The problem was using a source was not a guarantee of accuracy, therefore if I ran someone's name for a criminal or motor vehicle record and it came back no hit I had no way a verifying if that was correct or not. From experience people did not like paying for a no hit. I decided I was going to not use sources and go strait to the well for information. If I needed bank records, I would figure out a pretext and call the bank. If I needed phone records I would pretext the phone company. No matter what it was I needed I was going to pick up a phone and convince the person on the other end of the phone that I was the person who was allowed to obtain that information via the phone. And so it begins my path into pretext and social engineering. No place was safe or sacred if it had the information I would get.
