Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, consort of Elizabeth II, Queen of Great Britain was born on the Greek island of Corfu on June 10, 1921. He was educated in England and Scotland and studied at the Britainnia Royal Naval College at Dartmouth in 1939. He served on several ships in World War II.
In 1947, he married crown princess, Elizabeth. He embraced his job and accompanied her on royal visits and occasionally stood in for her. His mission was also to preserve the British throne and traditions. He retired from public life in May 2017.
Prince Philip lived an active life and was a sportsman. He enjoyed such sports as sailing, piloting planes, polo and carriage racing. He would use his name to promote causes for the common good, such as building playing fields for British youth and protecting endangered wildlife.
He wrote the foreword or introduction for several books on sporting, nature, and history. Those books included Naturalized Mammals of the World (1985) by Sir Christopher Lever, An Eye for a Bird (1974) by Eric Hoskin and Frank W. Lane, A Hundred Years of Sail (1993) by Bekon of Cowes; and International Register of Historic Ships by Norman J. Brouwer.
Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, consort of Elizabeth II, Queen of Great Britain died at Windsor Castle in England on April 9, 2021. He was 99.
