Clifford Ross is an artist and writer who was born in New York City in 1952. He graduated from Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 1973 and earned his B.A. from Yale University in 1974. He was Artist-in-Residence at the Louisville School of Art in 1979. His awards include the A. Conger Goodyear Fine Arts Award from Yale University in 1974 and the Helen Foster Barnett Prize, Sculpture, National Academy of Design, in 1984.

In Abstract Expressionism: Creators and Critics: An Anthology, Ross uses interviews, essays, and letters exchanged between abstract artists and their critics to define the movement and explore the personalities of the artists. For The World of Edward Gorey, Ross provides the extensive interview with Gorey that introduces the artist, illustrator, writer, and theater designer to the reader.
