More DescriptionIn 2020, the UN was 75 years old, and it was a propitious time to take stock of past achievements, current problems and future prospects. So this essay reviews the history of the UN system, and that of its specialized agencies. It also reviews the structure of the UN system and its specialized agencies and includes a diagram that charts the links between different parts of the system. But global problems seemed to be beyond the UN's ability to tackle. From Climate Change to the Covid-19 pandemic, from rising inequalities to outright war in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, from water shortages to food security needs and much more. The UN did not seem able to do much about some of these issues.During this difficult period, thoughtful people have been thinking about how to address many of these problems. The NGIC participated in the mobilization of international opinion on the main issues confronting the world community. It participated in the drafting and circulation of open letters or petitions that called for action on some of the most urgent and iniquitous issues. Five such letters were launched.Five Open Letters (appeals or petitions) addressed to the UN, the G-20, or particular specialized agencies, were issued. The open letters are attached to this document as Appendixes 1-5. They were drafted by eminent experts in each field, and have been supported and co-signed by many eminent people, and their signatures appear in the document.
