More DescriptionThis paper surveys work done by the French research group AMIRA (Improvement of Investigation Methods and Applied Research for Development) from 1975 to 1990. It examines new methodologies developed in the field of statistical investigation. These innovations seek to provide a better understanding of the complex socio-economic conditions in developing countries -- especially those in Africa. The author describes new methodologies that can measure the impact of development programs and economic reforms currently used in African countries. The new methodologies focus on topics such as macro/micro perspectives, information needs and survey objectives, and quantitative and qualitative approaches. They also provide designs for rapid surveys, information systems, observation units, decision levels, and social categorization.
