More DescriptionThrough a Country Town Cookbook shares the memories of Evelyn Corrie Birkby during her final year of high school in 1935. Evelyn had just moved to Sidney, Iowa, and had to quickly adjust to being in a new school and new town. She grew to love the people, the businesses, the architecture, and the pulse of this growing farm community in Southwest Iowa. In this book, Evelyn recounts how she and her family moved to Sidney where her father had been assigned to be minister of the local Methodist church. She shares her memories of attending basketball games and dances in the high school basement, enjoying movies at the town theater on the square, socializing over milkshakes at Penn Drug Store, shopping at the many local grocery stores, and savoring penny candy from Rubink's candy store. Evelyn also writes about many of the town personalities in the 1930s, including local physicians, babysitters, pharmacists, carpenters, and even the town's palm reader. And Evelyn shares many of the local recipes that were her favorites in Southwest Iowa. Although Evelyn left Sidney for a decade after she graduated high school, she eventually returned to marry Robert Birkby, her high school classmate. Now more than 80 years after her high school graduation and 99 years old, Evelyn still lives in Sidney, where she writes about Iowa issues and personalities.
