More DescriptionSet in India in the fifties, this is the story of an arranged marriage. Surekha is married to Rome Chaudhry, a successful businessman in a British company. He is ambitious, with his sights set on becoming a Director when the British Directors leave India. He is spoilt by a doting mother and Surekha, who feels her life has been subordinated to her husband's life and career, is dissatisfied and unhappy. They live in a small manufacturing town, where their lives revolve around the Club. Into this set up comes David, a nephew of the British Director. He has been through World War Two and has been brought to India to make something of himself. He is reluctantly persuaded to direct a play. She Stoops To Conquer is chosen and Surekha is the leading lady. Rome's parents come to stay and to escape her domineering mother in law, Surekha throws herself into the rehearsals and she and David fall in love. The small community watches this development with varying emotions but one of them, Avinash, is filled with malice and jealousy and arranges for his wife to inform Rome of Surekha's affair during the performance of the play.Rome is devastated and informs Surekha's parents, simple old fashioned folk, and the mother has a heart attack. Surekha rushes home and tells David that she cannot go away with him; she is also fearful that Rome might keep their two children from her.She decides to remain with her husband who gets the Directorship and they move to Bombay. At a glittering reception at the Taj, she meets the Machiavellian Avinash who tells her some tragic news.
