But that "moment" was less than six months after having moved back from seven years living in Nicaragua and leaving in the midst of violent political upheaval. I was in the throes of reverse culture-shock, which in some ways I found harder than the culture shock of moving there. So I wrote these Advent reflections about our "timeless truths" but also very much impacted by what I was living through....

From the Introduction: Like much of my work, I wrote this in the heat of the moment. But that "moment" was less than six months after having moved back from seven years living in Nicaragua and leaving in the midst of violent political upheaval. I was in the throes of reverse culture-shock, which in some ways I found harder than the culture shock of moving there. So I wrote these Advent reflections about our "timeless truths" but also very much impacted by what I was living through. This is always true of us. We might imagine that we step out of time onto some Rock of Objectivity, but we never do. We always experience--and therefore interpret--through this moment we're living right now. God entered into the messy, concrete, and personal of our history, not as abstract truth but as a collection of cells that formed into a human body inhabited with the Spirit of God: Jesus. God incarnate. Advent is the incarnate God's coming to us, in that moment, and for us, in this moment.
