It is meant as a broad critique of both cultural and intellectual rhetoric of recalcitrance, estrangement and awayness that has long predominated within interpretations of American literature. Thoreau, Walt Whitman, Henry James, Robert Frost, James Joyce, and Donald Barthelme.
