Recently retired detective, Max Stecker can't seem to find fulfilment in life after retirement. He has no hobbies to speak of and spends his days worrying about the rabbits in his vegetable garden. Max's wife Sam, the owner of the local newspaper, suggests that he needs to find something more substantial to fill his days. She thinks the perfect solution is for him to fall back on his investigative experience and asks him to help her friend, Tom. Tom has noticed some odd happenings in the warehouse across the road from his farm. Max decides to investigate and stumbles onto a horrendous criminal enterprise that involves thousands of victims. No one would expect that the linchpin of such a widespread criminal enterprise would be in a backwater little town called Notwen.
