Ruby Perle is at the mercy of a man when her pa sells the wealthy gold claim, signs her guardianship to the young telegraph operator who delivered the message and takes off to parts unknown. Under Alaska law, she must be twenty-one to be free, and even then, she needs a male guardian to conduct business. Though wealth can be picked up off the beach, her future feels bleak.
