He is the director emeritus of the Whitney Museum of American Art. In addition, he has led three other major museums, the Rockefeller Folk Art Museum, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts & the Andy Warhol Museum. Trained as a painter at cornell University, He has written books & articles in association with museum projects. Among his honors & awards is an honorary degree from Hamilton College.
