More DescriptionPhotos in this book were captured by photographer Tyra X.G. Robertson during the last half of 2020. Oakland, like much of the world, was in a mandatory shelter-in-place quarantine due to the COVID-19 pandemic. After the police-inflicted death of George Floyd in May 2020, people around the world walked the streets in protest of police violence and systematic racism. Concerned about property damage, businesses started covering up their storefronts with plywood. To artists, these boarded up storefronts were ideal canvases. Our cities were transformed from a zombie apocalypse movie set into outdoor gallery. Some of the plywood canvases were kept and preserved by local groups, others were destroyed.
