Er stutzt sich dabei auf seine umfangreiche Analyse zu den Soggetti aus den Motetten des bedeutenden italienischen Komponisten Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina. Die drei Hauptkapitel zu Melodik, Rhythmik und Satztechnik beleuchten zunachst die wichtigsten Einzelparameter, bevor deren Zusammenspiel und Gewichtung untereinander erortert wird. Zugleich leistet diese Untersuchung einen Beitrag zum Verstandnis des Komponierens in der Renaissance, indem zur Sprache gebracht wird, welche Bedingungen das Zustande-kommen eines so umfangreichen Motettenschaffens wie bei Palestrina uberhaupt ermoglichten.
