He grew up in Indianapolis, Indiana, but spent is adolescence in Atlanta, Georgia. His father abandoned the family when Jihad was two and so he and his two siblings were raised by their mother. Uhuru attended alternative schools in Atlanta. In 1988 he attended Savannah State University. To pay for his education, Uhuru created a drug organization that targeted inner cities and projects. He raised a phenomenal amount of money which led to a lavish yet destructive lifestyle.

With the necessary funds, Uhuru turned to drugs. On March 19, 1992, he was arrested for possession of drugs and a firearm. He served seven years in six different penitentiaries. During his incarceration, Uhuru discovered a desire to help troubled youths and a desire to better himself through education. He began to write about his own discoveries and research topics that interested him. He wrote his first book entitled, "Wake Up Everybody: The Life of a Player," about the things he felt were misconceptions such as life, religion, society and his people.
