More DescriptionWallace Stevens across the Atlantic is a unique collectionof critical essays devoted to the major American poet Wallace Stevens (1879-1955). A select group of contributors considers the Transatlantic nature of Stevens' work, its translation into European languages and its transformation into other media. The volume explores how Stevens forged a new aesthetic out of his Transatlantic influences; and how, in turn, this aesthetic influenced various European poets and artists. It provides original accounts of how a poet wary of 'influence' created a poetry and poetics that are neither strictly Modernist nor simply post-Romantic, neither expressly American nor European, a unique body of work that, by travelling across and beyond such boundaries, continues to haunt contemporary verse. No volume focussing on the Transatlantic nature of Stevens' work has yet been published, and the line-up of Stevens experts is both cross-generational and unusually international.
