Britain never has been a democracy in the sense that Switzerland is. It has developed over time a form of representative and responsible government that has so far at least ensured a level of political stability that few other countries have experienced and many envy. Yet, by the end of the 1970s, Britain came close to becoming the first developed country to turn itself into an underdeveloped country. It managed - just - to avoid that fate. In this novel, Britain avoids that fate too, and what it also avoids is the socialist revolution that many had anticipated. With a hapless Labour Government in office, the political scene, though, is transformed, coming to be characterized by a level of violence in British society of an order not seen before in recent times, and, politically, with the Conservative Party literally blown away, populist movements compete for the political succession with few of the former safeguards to restrain them.
