More DescriptionIn the spring of 1856, veteran of the Crimean War and the Nicaraguan Civil War, Samuel Kingston, retreats from his pregnant wife, Sofia, his friends, guilty over his father's death. When Sofia's brother, Filipe, updates him on Walker war in Nicaragua, Samuel want's nothing more to do with Nicaragua. When his enemies, the Earls of Lucan and Sligo freeze Samuel's assets, he plans to use the Baltimore documents incriminating them in Walker's slavery plot to make them back off. Walker's agent, Colonel Fry, steals the documents when he attacks the Kingston manor in Clonakilty. To save the family estate, Samuel travels with Padraig and Filipe, to New York, to accept Vanderbilt's contract to support for the Central America countries fighting Walker's filibusters. When he learns the tycoon is in a race against Walker's allies to obtain arms, Samuel steals rifles destined for Walker, but Colonel Fry robs them back. News that Sofia and baby are headed to Nicaragua, forces Samuel to take a boat smuggling weapons to Costa Rica to arm the Costa Rican army. When they arrive in Costa Rica, the army imprisons, Samuel, Padraig, Filipe, and Chavez, accusing them of inciting rebellion. Samuel is freed by Vanderbilt's man, who wants him to convince President Mora to seize control of the San Juan River, Walker's lifeline to East Coast recruits. Samuel agrees to train the Costas on condition he does not go on the expedition. Samuel gathers the Euronica company who fought with him before. Colonel Brailier insists Samuel and the others join the expedition. The filibusters ambush them while they are rafting downriver through the jungle and kill dozens of Costa Rican soldiers. Padraig and most of the Nicaraguans are missing. The filibusters throw Samuel and the survivors into a gold mine to labor with other slaves. Padraig and most of the Nicaraguans survived and rescue Samuel's band. They seize the river, rescue Sofia, and Samuel forces Fry to return the Baltimore papers. Sam's family returns to Ireland and frees his fortune. He encourages Sofia to baptize John.
