Complicating the story further is that the reporter's wife and son are addicts and he has to deal with them while covering the story and having his affair. The reporter is also a playwright. Thus the novel not only tells how families are affected by addiction and deals with a blighted love affair, but also reveals insights into the worlds of theater and journalism.
