More DescriptionWinifred Nicholson's (1893-1981) art is often overlooked and she is overshadowed by her famous husband, Ben Nicholson. Christopher Andreae demonstrates that this neglect is unjustified. He has looked at newly available archive material and has liaised closely with the Nicholson family to establish a fresh context in which to interpret Winifred Nicholson's life and career. She was a prolific painter, travelling frequently to Scotland, Paris and Greece in search of landscapes. Her depictions of flowers are generally recognised as original in her use of colour, leading to her work being dubbed 'colourist'. Winifred also produced a body of portraits that are extremely accomplished. Her work is displayed in the Tate Britain, Kettle's Yard and 10 Downing Street.
