More DescriptionA topical story led by fifteen-year-old Emily who, after a transformative meeting with a Whitby witch, becomes a climate change activist with the Green Witch Brigade. Unfortunately, while attempting to stop the building of a new oil refinery in Devon, Emily makes several enemies including oil company boss, Jefferson G Krabb. She is held captive, first at the company HQ in London and then on a remote island off the south coast but makes a dramatic escape. With her friends she then goes on the offensive, organising a rally to prevent the deal being signed by politicians and business leaders at Chequers. Despite valiant efforts, including flying in at the last minute by microlight, Emily is betrayed, and the deal goes ahead. Following this defeat, Emily is discouraged and feels like giving up on the environmental movement but, after discovering pirate treasure, she vows to re-join the campaign. In the end, though Krabb lives to fight another day, she helps prevent his oil refinery plans. Throughout the novel, Emily also has to deal with her parents' breakup and the problems of making friends after relocating from Yorkshire to South Devon. Though she eventually succeeds in establishing a new life and relationships, she comes into conflict with some older girls and her parents remain apart. The novel ends on a hopeful note, however. One inspiration for Emily was Greta Thunberg and, though quite different personalities, are both strong, independent, young people with a passion for saving the planet. The novel traces Emily's introduction to environmental issues and includes contrasting points of view in an informative but incidental manner.
