Jeremy Thorton was a plantation owner's son in Alabama. During Jeremy's childhood, he and Amanda, a slave girl, became more than close friends. When the war erupted between the North and South, Jeremy, despite his father's protest, joined the confederate army and went off to war.As the war came to an end, Jeremy returned home to Amanda. Knowing their lives would be unhappy ones, they decided to head north to a new life.If it had not been for their great love, their lives would have been torn apart. Some northerners had no time for the south or the slaves, thus creating an emotional trip.After arriving in the north, Jeremy finds work at a lumber camp and Amanda works in the camp kitchen.Later on, they find several acres of over-cut land and carve out for themselves a small farm. In the meantime, Amanda works to have a school built for the area children and becomes their teacher.Then an unexpected tragedy falls upon them and their dreams become a nightmare.
