More DescriptionI—we [an infantry company of hard-core grunts] walked quiet and cautious through the jungle. The company wary as we closed in on the abandoned base camp the Special Forces left years ago. The walk up the side of a hill, steep, maybe thirty degrees through thick triple canopy underbrush was difficult to keep your M-16 at ready. After walking towards the summit for about one hundred-fifty yards, several of the men in the squad spotted rabbit fences*and rabbit snares. Then they noticed in the same area, fresh mackerel cans opened and hastily buried in the under-brush. These showed signs of active VC or NVA presence in the area. I, along with others signaled our Platoon Sgt, who advised the LT that all the indications showed the company was walking into an area occupied with at least several companies of VC/NVA.
