Because of its diverse range of subjects and their exposure to different eras and cultures, the field of Romance studies is particularly well placed when it comes to making a valuable contribution to this social and cultural phenomenon. For centuries people have collected testimony at pivotal events that have led to individual or collective breakdown. By presenting the perspectives of Romance literatures and cultures, this volume makes clear that testimony is not only a phenomenon of the 20th century, and goes on to call for a dialogue between established Holocaust research on testimony and more recent research approaches, such as on Latin American "testimonio".
